Noxgear Lighthound for Dogs Review – 3 Top Features for 2019

Last Updated on

Are you a pet owner that works a regular “9-5”? Like me, I’m sure you find yourself taking your canine for their daily walk at night, after a long day at work. My pet’s favorite part of the day is our regular walks. But there are two issues I have when I walk my pooch.

First, I prefer using a dog harness rather than a collar. Secondly, I’m always worried about a car hitting us because it’s too dark. But one product that has been very effective is the Noxgear Lighthound. This illuminated dog harness makes us visible in the darkest conditions. If you’re looking for a dog harness with lights then read on about the Noxgear.

Noxgear Lighthound Vest Features

Lights

This product allows your canine to be visible from half a mile away and offers 360-degree illumination with its two LED (40 lumens) lights. The light source comfortably sits between your pet canine’s shoulder blades, forming an “X-shape” around the entire body with flexible fiber optics.

A silicone rubber case protects the lights, so you never have to worry about the LED pipes getting damaged in the rain. Remove the LED lights before washing and cleaning. Also, you don’t have to worry about the LED bulbs fading as time passes, they are built to maintain maximum brightness.

Based on the science of visual perception, this Noxgear product offers 8 solid lighting options and 6 multicolor flashing and slow fading modes, with the press of a single button. Pick a light to match your pet’s mood or one that will make you visible in any conditions.

Lighting Colors:

  • Red
  • Yellow
  • Magenta
  • Blue
  • Purple
  • Pink
  • Green
  • Cyan

Flashing & fading color modes:

  • Disco Dog
  • Rainbow
  • Cool Comet
  • Rescue
  • Independence Day
  • Photon Burst

Micro USB Rechargeable Battery

You do not need to worry about continually having to buy or change batteries. A rechargeable lithium-ion battery powers the light source. The battery will last about 12 hours before you need to charge it via micro USB cord.

The product only comes with the cable, but no charging block or anything of the sort to plug the cable into for it to charge. To mitigate this problem, I usually use either a charging block (from iPhone), USB wall socket, my computer, or car to recharge my Noxgear Lighthound, which adds to the product’s convenience.

Machine Washable

This product is made with military grade Cordura fabric. It not only makes it durable but also safe for the washing machine. But remember to remove the LED lights prior to washing the harness portion.

These can be cleaned by hand using a wet cloth. To remove the lighting source, simply unscrew the pack, which can be found on its underside. I always hang-dry my Noxgear Lighthound after washing it.

Sizing

This product comes in 4 adjustable sizes, from sizes small to extra-large. So it should not be difficult to find one to fit your pup perfectly. The two measurements used to determine its size are chest girth and weight (pounds).

A small vest will fit a canine with a chest size of 12.5’’-21’’ and weighs less than 15 pounds. A medium one will comfortably fit a chest girth of 17.5”-30’’ and a canine that weighs anywhere from 14-45 lbs. A large Noxgear harness can fit a dog with a chest size of 23.5”-40” and a weight from 40-95 lbs.

Finally, the extra-large Lighthound support will fit a canine with a chest circumference of 32.5” – 50” and a weight of anything north of 90 pounds. But one thing to notice is that there’s is a slight overlap in the sizing, which is great if you find your dog in between sizes and still growing; which I found convenient.

Safety

The Cordura material for the Noxgear makes this product extremely durable and weatherproof, so you never have to worry about the harness breaking while you’re walking or running.

Not only do the lights make your pet visible, but this product also incorporates construction grade 3M® Scotchlite® retro-reflectivity and fluorescence. The 3M material adds an extra level of visibility for you and your pet, especially when you’re caught in a moving car’s headlights.

Pros

  • High visibility – LED lights and 3M Scotchlite reflector technology
  • Lightweight & Breathable (3 oz)
  • Survives subzero temperatures
  • Weatherproof
  • Light can be screwed off for when the Noxgear vest itself needs to be washed in the machine
  • Can be used with collar or harness

Cons

  • Higher price point
  • More of a vest than a harness, so you might want to double up for extra security
  • Not considered a no-pull harness, may cause discomfort around the neck of dogs that tug.
  • Comes with micro USB cord but no power block
  • Harness latches under your canine
  • Stops charging after a while
